This past Sunday hundreds gathered at Mill Pond Park to celebrate their community and Canada’s 150th birthday at MP Jowhari’s Second Annual Community Barbecue. 150 years ago our idea of Canada became an identity: an identity built on the hope that together we will thrive as a nation. MP Jowhari’s Community BBQ illustrated the true nature of this idea as this past Sunday we were able to see all the separate elements of this town come together and flourish as one. Despite the rain, the event was a huge success and we owe it all the invaluable work of the office staff, volunteers, exhibitors and performers without whom the event would not have been possible.
In spirit of reconciliation and in respect for our Indigenous Peoples, we acknowledged the Indigenous land that we stood on and showed reverence for the land of the Iroquois, Chippewa, Huron and Anishinabek. We were lucky enough to have performances by the Sacred Spirit Dancers, a First Nations Metis and Inuit Performance company that bridges the gap and brings cultural awareness to FNMI communities through traditional teachings, arts, music and dance.
Throughout the afternoon we had the privilege of enjoying outstanding performances by Nader Naderi, the Hindu Temple Society of Canada, Nina Dance Feet, Raha Dance Group and Chorus York. A very warm thank you to all the presenters for sharing your amazing talents with Richmond Hill.
We would like to thank all in attendance: including all of our elected officials, dignitaries and special guests. Minister Reza Moridi, MP Ali Ehsassi, Ward 6 Councillor Godwin Chan and School Trustee Carol Chan took time out of their busy schedules to join our community and participate in the event.
We also would like to extend our gratitude to all the vendors and exhibitors that attended the BBQ. Thank you to the Richmond Hill Arts Alliance, STEM kids Rock, the Richmond Hill Group of Artists, the Richmond Hill Chinese Seniors’ Association; The Hindu Temple Society of Canada, Tzi Chi Foundation, Connection Cards, The YRPD, the Curtain club, Home on the Hill, Paradise Charity Group, L.I.G.H.T, Natural Answers, Pirooz centre, and everyone at Grand Genesis.
Last but certainly not least, we would like to extend our utmost gratitude to everyone who attended the BBQ. We hope you enjoyed the event and we look forward to seeing you all next year!
