The Richmond Hill Constituency Youth Council program is established through the Office of Majid Jowhari, Member of Parliament. The Youth Council provides an opportunity for youth to meet, discuss issues that concern them and provide input to the MP on areas of interest to them. The MP can then take these inputs back to Ottawa as various committees and Parliament are working on legislation. Sub-groups of the Youth Council focus on specific areas of interest and develop actions/recommendations that can be considered and incorporated as the MP works with Parliament to develop legislation and programs. The group also gets involved in a number of community-based events throughout the course of the year.
The range of topics that the group may wish to discuss/consider is broad and could include:
Overall, the CYC provides an opportunity for youth to actively participate in the broader political process and provide non-partisan advice to their MP.
Why is this initiative important?
Giving the youth of Richmond Hill an opportunity to engage in the political process, exchange ideas and get involved in their communities is critical to ensuring that we retain a vibrant, involved and dynamic community. Having the opportunity to interact with the youth of Richmond Hill provides me with the opportunity to hear a different perspective and better appreciate the issues that are important to the young people in our riding.
